The humble origin of this dates back to 1971 a partnership amongst the Fonseka family ventures into the setting up of a small scale operation to trade in auto spares and this was housed at 251/16, Sri Sangaraja Mawatha, Colombo 10, with the advent of the open economy in the late 1977, they embarked on direct imports and the partnership expanded its activities which resulted in the incorporation of Tyre House (Pvt) Ltd in 1985. This Company was appointed the Agent for ‘Roadstone’ Tyres and ‘Cherry” Automotive Gaskets which subsequently enjoyed a fair market share. Having made an impact in the automotive spares trade, the Group embarked on the import of reconditioned engines and spares from Japan in 1980. The Group established itself in the trade and in 1987, diversified into the manufacture of polymer printed polythene. For this purpose Polyfilms (Ceylon) ltd., was incorporated and a factory was established in Pallekelle Industrial park in 1987 and later relocated at Ja-ela, closer to Colombo to enjoy added advantage. In 1987 several agencies were granted to the Group and these include ‘Thaio’ Engine Bearings from Japan, GP HOUSE Automotive Batteries from Malaysia, ‘Volta’ Automotive group batteries from Bangladesh, ‘Intirub’ Tyres from Indonesia, ‘Cheng Shin’ & ‘Maxxis’ Tyres from Taiwan and ‘K2’ Automotive Filters from Korea between 1993 and 1998 and to handle these efficiently Benedictsons (Pvt) Ltd., and Tyre House Trading (Pvt) Ltd., were incorporated. The Tyre House Group is a recipient of the prestigious award. ‘The International Trophy for business expansion” – Madrid, for the distinguished contribution.
